HISTORICAL PHOTO PORTRAITS

These historical photo portraits are commissioned by clients, beginning with a painting of their choice. It may be a work of art that the client has always loved, or it could be a portrait of an ancestor, or just one that is suited to the project. In all cases, once the historic painting has been selected, the next step consists of developing decors (including trompe l’oeil) and period costumes as in original painting. There are costume fittings in Paris or at the client’s home, followed by the final photo shoot which can either be in a Paris studio or in another location of the client’s choice. Prints are of the highest quality and can be of whatever size the client choses, including as large as the original portrait.

Each commission is individually conceived and priced according to a number of factors including client location, number of participants, decors and costumes and size and quality of final photo prints.

This client wanted to be photographed as his great-grandfather, Lord Ribblesdale, an Edwardian politician who was known for his elegant style. Working from the portrait by John Singer Sargent hanging in the National Gallery in London, the decors were painted in trompe l’oeil and the costumes were made or rented. The client flew into Paris from overseas and a high-definition print eight-feet high was delivered to the client several weeks later.

This historical photo portrait was commissioned for a client who had always loved this painting by John Singer Sargent of the Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, hanging in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The client’s wife organized to have their two daughters dressed in costumes and posed in decors that reproduced the painting, with the trick that the two daughters were photographed twice, in different costumes, and superimposed in the painting. It was given to a delighted client as a surprise birthday gift.
